PRESS RELEASE IGP ONOVO DENIES STATEMENT The attention of the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo, OON, NPM, mni has been drawn to a spurious message being circulated via SMS to the effect that the care-free attitude of Northern elite was responsible for the spate of political and civil disturbances in the region. The Acting IGP, and indeed the Nigeria Police Force, is peeved that this mischievous message is being sent to the personal phones of influential persons in the North, notably key traditional rulers, political fathers and opinion leaders. From our point of view, the intention of the hack writer is to cause bad blood between the new Police leadership and the Northern elite, who are seen as veritable partners of the Nigeria Police Force in the move to reposition the Force. For the avoidance of doubt, the Acting IGP did not author that message; neither did he ask anybody to do so on his behalf. To further worsen the disjointed message, the author signed off as Ogbonnaya Onovo, which is not the name of the Acting IGP. For the records, the name of the Acting IGP is Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo. The Nigeria Police Force wishes to observe that the Acting Inspector-General of Police is old and literate enough to know his real name. Besides, he is part of the elite in Nigeria. The Nigeria Police Force understands the myriads of challenges confronting the various sectors of the nation, and we are willing to partner with well-meaning citizens and groups to seek solutions to these problems. The Nigeria Police Force hereby seizes this opportunity to warn mischief makers to desist from their evil enterprise, and allow the Acting Inspector-General of Police sufficient breathing space to tackle the challenges of policing Nigeria in the 21st century. ACP EMMANUEL C.S. OJUKWU FORCE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER, THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE, FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA.
