IGP’S PRESS BRIEFING ON THE ARREST OF KIDNAPPERS IN ENUGU AND KADUNA STATES ON FRIDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER, 2009 AT THE FHQ
 IGP’S CONFERENCE HALL, ABUJA

Gentlemen of the Press

It is my pleasure once again to welcome you to today’s press briefing. The issue of kidnapping has recently taken a front burner within the polity. The Nigeria Police has resolved to fight the crime to a stand-still. Thus, much attention is now focused on arresting these criminals and curtailing the menace throughout the country.

CASE:   KIDNAPPING:

VICTIM – Madam Grace Mamah of Enugu State

SUSPECTS
1. Odumegwu Adoplphus ‘m’
2. Ogbonnaya Ogochukwu ‘m’
3. Okonkwo Kennis Victor ‘m’
4. Sunday Okoye ‘m;
5. Hussein Yusuf a.k.a Freeman ‘m’
6. Isah Ibrahim.
7. Ibrahim Mohammed a.k.a. IIB ‘m’

On 18th August, 2009, one Madam Grace Mamah was kidnapped by unknown persons and taken to an unknown destination.

Thereafter, the kidnappers started calling the complainant, the son of the victim; Chief Emeka Mamah ‘m’ demanding for a sum of Five Million Naira (N5m) otherwise the kidnapped victim would be killed. After series of negotiations, the kidnappers settled for a sum of Three Million Naira (N3m) which was delivered to the kidnappers before the victim was released on 21st August, 2009.

When all hopes to track down the hoodlums appeared to have been lost, Chief Emeka Mamah (complainant) relentlessly travelled to Lagos to lay same complaint to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command and furnished the Commissioner with the GSM number of the kidnappers which they used in the course of bargaining with the family during the period of captivity of their victim.

Based on information, on 4th September, 2009, crack detectives from Lagos State Police Command left for Enugu and commenced the trailing of the kidnappers via the GSM number given to the Command.  On 5th September, the operatives through skillful planning and intelligence gathering tracked down one of the kidnappers, Adolphus Odumegwu at Enugu Airport. The arrested Adolphus Odumegwu subsequently led the operatives to Nsukka where six others suspects were apprehended, namely:

1. Odumegwu Adolphus ‘m’
2. Ogbonnaya Ogochukwu ‘m’
3. Okonkwo Kennis Victor ‘m’
4. Sunday Okoye ‘m’
5. Hussein Yusuf a.k.a Freeman ‘m’
6. Isah Ibrahim.
7. Ibrahim Mohammed a.k.a. IIB ‘m’

Meanwhile the following gang members who escaped from Enugu where arrested by the Police in Kaduna while trying to withdraw their ill-gotten money in an account already flattened by Lagos Police Command.  They are:

1 Eze Leonard Ifeanyi ‘m’
2 Andy Asogwa
3 Amichi Nnamdi

In another development, on 5th September, 2009 one Professor Charles Attah who was earlier kidnapped by another gang while coming out of a church service was immediately released without waiting to receive any ransom, when the kidnappers became apprehensive that the dragnet of the Nigeria Police would soon catch up with them.

I wish to thank the informants that assisted in the making these arrests possible. This will continue to confirm our belief in police-public partnership as a veritable means of enabling the Police to perform their duties efficiently and effectively.  For the Police to realize its objectives against this menace, we would continue to appeal to Nigerians to consider it a priority to give useful information to the Police on any suspected persons, acts of criminality and suspicious movements within the land. It is my firm promise that such information will be effectively utilized and treated with utmost confidentiality.

Thank you for your attention.

I salute the intelligence and doggedness of the officers of the lagos State command who went to Enugu to fish out this die-hard criminals. They deserve commendation.
In the same vein, I will urge the IG to ask his men to stop complaining about "this or that" and tackle this monsterous but hydra-headed ugly development in the South
East called Kidnapping. This is really getting out of hand. Most Nigerians around the globe are getting extraordinarily worried about this development.
Most of our members who visited Nigeria recently have complained bitterly on the dangers and challenges posed by this stubborn criminals. This is a new criminal trend that needs to be checked. I understand the difficulties of jobblessness and its attendant hardship on fellow Nigerians but this must stop.
My organisation is still watching this development with keen interest. We will react formally in the next few months.
Please officers, step up and curtail this menace. Paying a ransome is v...
