PRESS RELEASE IGP PRESENTS CHEQUES TO THE FAMILIES OF POLICE OFFICERS WHO WERE KILLED DURING BOKO HARAM CRISIS

The Inspector-General of Police, Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo, OON, NPM, mni has today 8th September, 2009 presented cheques to the 24 families of Police Officers who were killed during the Boko Haram crisi

s in Borno State.

The IGP who described the occasion as emotional, said the Police as the most visible agency of government, has its personnel vulnerably exposed to dangers in the course of discharging their statutory duties.  He assured that the Police will not be deterred but rather be more committed in performing its roles as peace-makers.   He noted the money paid is not the usual insurance benefits to officers who died in the line of duty, rather it was the contribution made by the Police authority to assist in alleviating the sufferings of the immediate families and other beneficiaries of the slain officers.  He counseled that the money should be used prudently.

In their response, the entire beneficiaries were grateful to the Police authorities for their timely intervention; they stated that when the vacuum created by the absence of their bread-winners was becoming a source of concern, the IGP’s timely gesture has greatly filled the gap.

I am drawned to the recent news of the IGP issuing cheques to the families of those police officers who lost their lives during the recent religious riots.
In as much as I welcome the token given (which can never replace the lives of the lost), I am appaled at the scanty amouries at many police stations around the country. There has been decades of rreligious killings in this country; HOW MANY OF THESE VANDALS HAS EVER BEEN PROSECUTED? We should remember that our society is not as civil as the western countries, to deserve a police SERVICE. WE STILL NEED THE POLICE AS A VISIBLE FORCE. Even in the civilised nations the police maitains a very VISSIBLE SECTION THAT IS HIGHLY MOBILE AND ARMED.

I appeal to the IG to arm the police, so we dont loose our personel to evry crisis.

DONT YOU THINK THEY DERSERVE A POST MORTEM PROMOTION. THE POLICE IS THE MOST EXPOSED TO DEATH DUE TO JOB INDUCED. HOW MANY PEOPLE DIE FROM OTHER PROFESSION LIKE THIS. THE LAST DSB IS STILL BEING AWAITED AND MOST OF THE DESEASED INSPECTORS WERE EXPECTANT OF THE PROMOTION HAVING FULFILLED ALL RIGHTIOUSNESS. RELEASE THE DSB PLEASE.

Good day, it was thoughtful of the Nigerian Police Force to provide a stop gap ameliorating measure for the failies of the deceased. It would go a long way inn helping them meet short term needs. I owuld opine that the polie authority should institute an Education Investment Plan for its personnel's children. Though it is contributory, the periodic contribution is a mere token and would not have a major impact on the personnel. This would guarantee qualittative education for the children of men and owne of the force. There are so many financial insitutions in the ountry that are rendering this service in the country. First City Monument Bank Plc has such product. The force is the most visible of all governement agencies in the country and it is bound to suffer one form of loss or the other so the future needs to be planned for today.

The Almighty God will continue to provide the wisdom and knowledge rquired by this all important agency of govenment to carry out its functions...
