PRESS RELEASE RE : CORRUPTION IN POLICE The Nigerian Tribune newspaper got it all wrong. Apart from being wild in its imaginations, your lead story on Friday, 7th August 2009, was totally misplaced. If such a ‘revelation’ was worth its salt, basic and decent journalistic tenet expected that someone would take the credit with a by-line. But that was not so: the revelation has no author! There is therefore no risk in saying that your story on Police corruption was merely an exercise in mathematical gymnastics, as it assumed all variables to be equal. The truth of the matter is that illegal posting of Police personnel to unauthorized persons and beats has always attracted severe sanctions from supervising officers. It has never been condoned. As such, it is not a wide-spread, routine money-spinner as speculated in the Nigerian Tribune publication under reference. The effort of the OGBONNA ONOVO-led Police leadership is to finally stamp out the malaise, and ensure that police officers are not allowed to function as personal security/orderlies to persons who are not entitled to have them. Let it be restated that the mandate of the Nigeria Police is to be readily available and accessible to serve the wider generality of the populace. This move should be the emphasis of a realistic medium, please. ACP EMMANUEL C. S. OJUKWU FORCE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABUJA
