The Nigeria Police Medical Services (NPMS) was established in 1975 and is presently headed by AIG. Dr. U. O. Usun. The primary function of Police Medical Services is rendering health care services to serving members of the NPF, retirees of the NPF, their immediate families, detainees in Police cells and civilians working in the establishment. The Nigeria Police Medical Services also renders health care services to the general public in cases of emergency such as road traffic accidents, robbery victims, flood, fire disasters, election period, etc. Presently the NPMS has two hospitals in Falomo lagos and Alkome in Maiduguri. In addition it has 16 cottage hospitals and 28 clinics all spread around the State Commands. The Police Hospital Falomo is a 75 bed fully fledged hospital with ancillary departments such as laboratory, physiotherapy, dental, radiology, public health, surgery, family planning and reproductive health care, ophthalmology, dermatology, O & G., Anaesthesia and Pediatrics. It runs 24 hours services with admission facilities. Patients are referred for specialist treatment, when the need arises to Lagos Teaching Hospital, General Hospital Lagos, National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos etc. As part of its achievements, the unit has carried out Tuberculosis test and treatment of over 3000 patients. The classification of tuberculosis as one of the deadliest air-borne disease has almost become a thing of a past as a result of modern trend in this regards. The quest by the World Health Organization (WHO) to completely eradicate this deadly disease is yielding good results as our achievement within this community is a living testimony. Within this period under review, personnel attended several workshops and seminars which have invariably enhanced their knowledge and professional skills.
