Of the 100 cadets that attended the Course 21, only 25 officers breasted the tape of formal retirement and were honoured for this feat on Friday at Ikeja, the very spot where they started their career in the Force some 35 years ago. Okiro’s speech was at once, philosophical, poetic, and nostalgic. But it was firmly anchored on history: “Let us … befriend history by being mindful of whatever we do as Police Officers. Let us always caution ourselves and apply restraints before taking any action. Let us serve humanity with utmost respect and fear of God. Let us always do what is just and right in the eye of man and God. Let us befriend history so that it will not judge us at an unguarded hour.” Among the retirees being honoured were deputy and assistant inspectors-general, commissioners, and deputy commissioners of police. Though retiring in different ranks, they are united by the same Cadet Course 21 that they undertook together at the Ikeja Police College. The College Parade Ground from where their careers were launched provided a fitting venue to bid their colleagues a final farewell. Mr. Okiro spoke to celebrants embarking on retirement, as well as to those still serving, and his message was the same: one day, a policeman will bow out from active service, and then “history will surface to judge (his) actions, inactions, and reactions.” He reminded officers that the same society they policed will be the same society that will receive the police officer when he retires, and then asked the crucial question: “How will you be received (by society) when you retire?” To the retirees, Okiro waxed prosaic: “I am sure that these 35 years have been characterized by twists and turns of life; ups and downs; the good, the bad, the ugly, even the unmentionable… Only 25 of the 100 officers of this great course made it to the end. To these great officers, I salute their uncommon courage, indescribable patience, irrepressible determination, resilient spirit that saw them through these years unto retirement.
