A total of 1628 police rank and file police officers, arbitrarily dismissed in 2007, were last week recalled on the orders of the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Their dismissal followed a highly controversial rationalization exercise carried out during the regime of former IGP Sunday Ehindero.
Secretary of the Commission, Engr. Esther Gonadi, said in a letter to Inspector General Ogbonna Onovo, that the Commission had decided to recall the dismissed officers and give them different degrees of pardon.
•    1,511 officers are fully recalled
•    71 officers were recalled but asked to proceed on retirements with full benefits, and
•    46 others are recalled but would undergo medical assessment to judge their suitability for police duties.
The lucky policemen were dismissed in January 2007, but most of them petitioned the police service commission to save them from what they described as “wrongful” dismissal.
The Commission yielded to their cries, as well as the intervention of other retired senior police officers who were disturbed by the development, and set up committees to review the criteria used for the rationalization exercise.
The NPF management has accordingly directed those affected to report to their former commands and zones for necessary clearance.
