The Inspector-General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo has advanced reasons why he mapped out strategies that addressed the security needs of Nigerians immediately he assumed office. He made the disclosure to the people of Abia state where he had gone to officially commission forty Ford Ranger vehicles and state of the art communication equipment donated by the Abia state government to the Nigeria police. An elated IGP, said that, what informed his strategies was to create a conducive environment for the citizenry thus creating a conducive environment for the implementation of government policies and programmes.According to him, there can be no meaningful socio-economic development in any society without domestic peace, law and order.Said he “this is strategically crucial to the survival of democracy in the state and the country”.IGP Onovo noted that the responsibility for safeguarding the nation cannot be left in the hands of the police and other law enforcement agencies alone adding that it is the collective responsibility of all citizens and all stakeholders. He said that operating in an insecure environment increases the cost of transacting business, which in the long run discourages capital investments in any society. He commended the Governor and people of the state for their cooperation with the Abia state police command urging them not to relent in their joint effort at ensuring the realization of Mr president’s vision for the year 2020 which he stated is anchored on domestic security. In his brief speech, the governor Theodore Orji called on the people of the state to always assist the police in their constitutional bid to fight crime adding that the state government will not relent in cooperating with the police to reduce crime in the State.
