The Nigeria Police Welfare Insurance Scheme came into existence 1st May, 1992 as the first ever effort by the Police authority to provide Insurance cover for officers and men of the Nigeria Police. The programme is designed to compensate members of the NPF who might have suffered accident, injury and death in the course of their official duty. As a contributory welfare programme, the Scheme covers the following benefits.
Every serving member of the NPF contributes part of their monthly salary towards the Scheme according to individual ranks. Below therefore, is the table showing breakdown of contributions and benefits accruing to members of the NPF:- TABLE A: FORCE INSURANCE SCHEME (approved new rate)
In addition to Death, Permanent Disability, and Medical Expenses, the Scheme equally provides for Withdrawal Benefits which is payable to members in case of retirement, resignation and dismissal etc. The Nigeria Police Welfare Insurance Scheme is an in-house Scheme.
5.1.8.1 GROUP PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE SCHEME: The Group Personal Accident Scheme of the NPF came into being on 15th October, 2002. It was a direct effort of the Federal Government about the desirability of having accident covers in terms of Insurance for officers and men of the NPF. The three benefits derivable from the Scheme are as follows: (a) Death Benefits (Accidental), (b) Permanent Disability (Accidental) and (c) Medical Expenses Benefit (Accidental) Any Policeman who is attacked by mob, shot dead/wounded by armed robbers, injured in motor accidents is adequately covered by this Scheme. The Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (GPAIS) is a non-contributory scheme, compared to that of the NPWIS. The fund to run the Scheme is being provided by the Federal Government through yearly appropriation on renewal basis. The Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme as a government welfare programme for the NPF is a time-barred Scheme. Under this Policy, all notification of claims must get to the Brokers and Underwriters within 60 days of the occurrence necessary documentation and subsequent payment. Any claim(s) not processed within this agreed period would be repudiated and forfeited by the beneficiaries. Below is the table showing benefits of the Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme (GPAIS):
TABLE B: GROUP PERSONAL ACCIDENT INSURANCE SCHEME

The fourth year of the scheme could be said to be fair compared to that of last year, presently the Inspector-General of Police had tried so hard in the settlement of claims and had seriously shown concern on the plight of the beneficiaries in ensuring that they get their entitlements within the least possible timeframe.
